The primary research focus of the Optical Sensing Laboratory at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of New York University Polytechnic Institute is the development of health Monitoring and condition assessment approaches for evaluation and characterization of the internal chemical states of the materials in service, since most processes of aging involve or are assisted by specific Chemical states or reactions. It is expected that this approach will improve future design through understanding the effects of natural trends and rates of aging, and it will enhance infrastructure performance by optimizing repair and replacement strategies and schedules. By engaging students from across diverse disciplines we cultivate an approach for better understanding of aging of civil infrastructure materials.
